326.    Alasdair Gray, writer, painter, muralist and playwright, was a Scottish artist of international standing whose paintings, books and murals form an unparalleled body of work in contemporary culture.

Born in 1934 in Glasgow, he graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1957.

Gray was a prolific writer of novels, short stories, plays, poems and literary criticism.
His novel Lanark is now regarded as a classic and one of the landmarks of 20th Century fiction.
He was an accomplished artist who has painted remarkable murals and is also the designer and illustrator of his own books.

As well as recording the life and people of Scotland in his paintings, he produced the ceiling mural, for the auditorium of the Oran Mor in Glasgow, one of the largest works of art in Scotland.

Alisdair died in December 2019.

Lots 326-410 form the residual contents of his studio, workplace and home in Marchmont Terrace.

Provenance - originally Jenners of Edinburgh

Oscar Paterson was one of the most important stained glass artists of his time.
Born in Glasgow, Paterson trained with Whitefriers Glass in London before returning to Glasgow to live and work.
His work is described as the epitome of The Glasgow Style, which was beginning to develop at that time, and he influenced many young artists and designers associated with that style like Jessie M King, EA Taylor and Anne MacBeth.
His public, ecclesiastical and domestic works are represented in UK, Europe, India and Australia.
Oscar Paterson's works can be seen in many cathedrals including Glasgow Cathedral, St. Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh and St Magnus' Cathedral in Orkney.
