JOHN BELLANY CBE RSA HRSA (SCOTTISH 1942-2013)
SAILING SHIP ON THE OPEN SEA (CIRCA 1963)
Oil on canvas, signed lower right, 51 x 61cm (20 x 24'')
Provenance: The late Jack and Jean Crichton, Edinburgh
Thence by family descent
Note: The Crichton family were proprietors of the Rose and Crown pub in Rose St. Edinburgh, in the mid-1960s. As a student, John Bellany frequented the pub and became a family friend. One day, Jack said to a cash-strapped John 'do me a painting, but none of your nudie nonsense, and I will give you a fiver'.
Note: The painting was originally unsigned, but - at daughter/vendor Louise's request - the artist was happy to sign it for her in the early 1990s.
Good, original condition. Star cracking and craquelure. Pinhole to central area. Faint stretcher marks. Surface grime.
