Great find at Greenock Roadshow

A rare Chinese vase with a Qianlong mark and of the period was brought into a recent Great Western Auctions roadshow in Greenock.

The vase had a large crack across the base, however this did not deter strong bidding from London Chinese bidders.

Bids started at £380 and quickly ran into the thousands, eventually selling for a record in house price of £40,000. Our sale also produced a record total of £373,000 for 858 lots.

So if you have any items lying in the attic or tucked away in a drawer, they might be worth looking at again!

BBC Flog It Sale

There was even more excitement than usual at our sale on Saturday 12th April.

The room was packed with buyers. We had visitors from France, Holland, Australia, England, Ireland and Wales, as well as all our regulars from Scotland.

We all welcomed the BBC “Flog It” production team to Great Western Auctions with the delicious Paul Martin presenting with James Lewis, Adam Partridge and Caroline Hawley as experts. The “Flog It” valuation day at Hopeton House had turned up some wonderful items. All the owners turned up for the sale and I am happy to say that I was able to give a good few contributors some wonderful four figure surprises from the rostrum.

An incomplete suit of armour made £2,500, a Breitling navitimer chronograph wristwatch £1,620, a damaged but rare Charles Vyse figure “The Figure Awakes” £1,000 and a Wheatstone Concertina £1,300. It was wonderful to see the astonished and delighted faces of the “Flog It” contributors as the bidding just kept on going. What a lovely job I have!

It was back to business as usual on Monday. My wonderful team were setting up, cataloguing and photographing for our next Antiques and Collectables sale on 26th April.

Preparations are also well under way for our Quarterly Fine Arts and Antiques Sale on 7th June. We already have some marvellous items consigned for this auction.

If you have items that you think might be suitable for any of our sales just bring them along to our premises at 1291 Dumbarton Road, Glasgow, G14 9UY, on a Tuesday to Thursday (10AM – 4PM) or Monday and Friday by appointment.

We will be delighted to see you. Anita

Early works, submitted to The Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Exhibition in 1989 and the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition in 1990 were an immediate sell out.

In November 1999 work was shown for the first time in New York, when 21 of his paintings were displayed at The International 20th Century Arts fair at The Armoury. International collectors flew out for the Event and all 21 paintings were sold on the opening night.

Prestigious public figures and institutions have commissioned Vettriano’s work. In 1996 Sir Terence Conran commissioned a series of paintings, inspired by Sir Malcolm Campbell, to be hung in his new Bluebird Club in London. These “Bluebird Paintings” subsequently sold for more than £1m.

Vettriano has studios in London, Scotland and Nice and counts, Jack Nicholson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Tim Rice and Robbie Coltrane amongst his collectors. Formula One Legend Sir Jackie Stewart includes, in his private collection, a triptych by Vettriano entitled Tension, Timing, Triumph- Monaco 1971.

In 2004 Jack Vettriano was presented with the OBE for services to the Visual Arts and was the subject of a South Bank documentary entitled “Jack Vettriano: The People’s Painter”. In 2010 he was presented with the Great Scot of The Year Award.

This iconic work is included in the major Retrospective Exhibition of Vettriano’s work in Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum ( 21 September 2013- 21 February 2014). This comprehensive retrospective brings together more than 100 works from private collections around the world, many on public display for the first time and includes key works such as Dance Me To The End Of Love, Mad Dogs, Bluebird at Bonneville and Billy Boys.

The record breaking attendance of visitors to Kelvingrove during this Exhibition illustrates the importance of Jack Vettriano’s work to contemporary culture.

18/01/14 Bargain Hunt Sale

It seemed as if the whole world had turned up on Saturday for our first sale of 2014, our 25th anniversary year.

Our lovely staff were delighted to welcome back all our regulars, as well as over 100 new buyers with visitors from Devon, Staffordshire, Wigan and Australia.

There were almost 1,000 lots of Jewellery, Silver, Collectables, Paintings, Ceramics and Furniture in this Antiques and Collectables Sale with particularly strong results in Jewellery and Pictures.

Our customers gave a right royal welcome to BBC1’s Bargain Hunt with the marvellous Tim Wonnacott presenting and lovely Catherine Southon and canny Paul Laidlaw as the team’s experts. We had terrific results with the Bargain Hunt lots. The Reds and the Blues had bought some smashing and interesting lots and the teams went home with money in their pockets, some of which would be donated to charity and a good few Golden Gavels.

Thanks everyone for making them so welcome. We all enjoyed ourselves and I just loved seeing all those smiling faces as I looked down from the rostrum.

After all the excitement it’s back to business as usual with preparations for our next sale on 1st February. I can’t believe that 25 years ago on 1st February 1989 I stood on the rostrum for the first time and conducted Great Western Auctions first ever sale. Happy Anniversary Great Western Auctions.

Our experts have already started cataloguing and photographing March Fine Sale items. There are some superb lots already consigned for this sale. If you have items that you think are suitable for our Quarterly Fine Arts and Antiques Sale or fortnightly Antiques and Collectables Sales please contact us or just come along to the saleroom on our valuation days, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 10am - 4pm, Monday and Friday by appointment. We would love to see you.

Jo Godwyn, a London Jewellery specialist, has been heading our wonderfully successful Jewellery Department since January 2013 and is delighted with the quantity and more importantly quality of the precious jewels Great Western Auction can offer our buyers.

Our specialist Quarterly Fine Arts and Antiques Sales have exceeded expectations in all the categories and particularly in Jewellery, Silver, Paintings, Ceramics and Furniture and the vibrant Chinese market has shown astonishing prices in all things Oriental. Our new full colour catalogue has been a great success with both buyers and sellers. We are already preparing for our March Fine Sale and our experts will welcome enquires from potential vendors.

We are all looking forward to 2014. Our first sale will be on January 18th. Tim Wonnacott and the wonderful Bargain Hunt team will be making five programmes on that day at Great Western Auctions. The Bargain Hunt items (there are some terrific and interesting lots) will be included in this Antiques and Collectables Sale.

19/08/13 The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2013

Anita Manning and Paul Howard had the pleasure of attending an evening by kind invitation of the Rt. Hon Alex Salmond First Minister of Scotland and Mrs Moira Salmond.

The evening began at Bute House where we had supper sitting with sixteen V.I.P. guests from Canada, America and throughout Scotland. After an excellent meal we were transported by coach, with police escort, through the city and into the castle grounds.

From our centrally seated vantage point high up overlooking the Esplanade, our view was extraordinary. This year, amongst the countries taking part were Mongolia, the Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Mexico and naturally the massed ranks of worldwide pipes and drums. With a grand finale from The Guard of Honour, The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Brigadier David Allfrey MBE had the responsibility of orchestrating the 64th season of The Tattoo, which must rank as one of the most memorable.

After the entertainment we returned to Bute House for more convivial chat, lasting into the wee small hours.

Excellent service was provided by the First Minister’s staff and it all made for a great night out.
